Privacy Policy — SymptomTap

Who is responsible

SymptomTap is developed and operated by Michael Picka under the Michael Software brand. Michael Picka is the responsible party for personal data that Michael Software actually receives or otherwise processes outside your devices.

Scope

This Privacy Policy applies to SymptomTap for iPhone, SymptomTap for Apple Watch, the related widgets, and the functions described below. It does not cover ordinary use of the Michael Software website. Website hosting and measurement are explained separately in the Website Privacy Notice.

SymptomTap does not require a Michael Software account. Its core features do not use a Michael Software backend or automatically upload your symptom records over the internet.

Information SymptomTap processes

SymptomTap processes the following information only when it is relevant to features you choose to use:

• Symptom records: symptom names and types, occurrence date and time, timed-episode duration, intensity, notes, personal triggers, medication tags, and whether an entry came from Apple Watch. These details provide logging, history, summaries, and exports.
• Custom configuration: custom symptom definitions, trigger and medication tags, favorites, display order, logging mode, and Home screen choices. These settings personalize Quick Log and related views.
• Application settings: language, appearance, onboarding state, reminder choices, export preference, and local status information for optional Apple Health access.
• Optional Apple Health context: the specific read-only data described in the Apple Health section. SymptomTap uses it to calculate context around a symptom entry and saves the resulting values with that entry on the device.
• Apple Watch and widget data: limited favorites, recent-entry summaries, active-episode details, language, and log/start/stop commands needed to make the Watch app and widgets work.
• Local notification information: the timing and state needed to schedule a daily check-in, a long-running episode reminder, or a post-episode follow-up on the device.

SymptomTap also calculates ordinary on-device charts and summaries from your records. These calculations are not profiling or automated decision-making that produces legal or similarly significant effects.

Storage and sync

Symptom records, custom configuration, saved Apple Health context, and application settings are stored locally in SymptomTap's protected app or App Group containers on your devices. Michael Software does not receive or maintain a server-side copy of your symptom records.

When you enable iCloud sync, SymptomTap uses Apple's iCloud services to keep supported app data in sync across your devices. Apple processes that data under its own terms. Michael Software does not operate the sync service and does not receive or maintain a server-side copy of your symptom records. Apple may also include app data in device backups according to your settings and Apple's terms; Michael Software does not control or have access to those Apple-managed backups.

Apple Watch and widgets

SymptomTap uses Apple's WatchConnectivity technology to move the information needed for logging between your iPhone and paired Apple Watch. A limited snapshot can include favorite symptoms, recent-entry summaries, active-episode details, and display language. The Watch can send commands to create an instant entry, start or stop an episode, or refresh its view.

The iPhone and Watch widgets read limited local information from an Apple App Group shared by SymptomTap and its extensions. These device-to-device and App Group transfers do not go through Michael Software servers.

Optional Apple Health access

If you enable Apple Health linking, SymptomTap asks Apple's permission to read selected HealthKit data around the time of a symptom entry. The feature is optional. SymptomTap does not write data to Apple Health.

Depending on what you allow and what Apple Health contains, SymptomTap can read:

• heart rate, resting heart rate, and walking heart rate average;
• heart-rate variability (SDNN), respiratory rate, and oxygen saturation;
• step count and systolic and diastolic blood pressure;
• sleep analysis, mindful sessions, and workouts;
• high-heart-rate, low-heart-rate, and irregular-heart-rhythm events.

The app derives context such as averages, ranges, counts, prior-night sleep duration, steps before an entry, or the timing of nearby workouts and mindful sessions. That derived context is saved locally with the symptom entry. Raw HealthKit samples are queried for these calculations but are not copied wholesale into the SymptomTap database.

Apple controls the permission screen and which values HealthKit returns. You can stop future access by switching off Apple Health linking in SymptomTap and by changing SymptomTap's access in the Health app or Apple Settings. Turning access off does not automatically remove health context already saved with earlier entries; delete those entries or remove the app data to remove the saved context.

SymptomTap does not use HealthKit data for advertising, marketing, data brokerage, or tracking. Michael Software does not sell HealthKit data or other health-related information.

Notifications

SymptomTap can schedule local reminders on your device. It does not register for remote push notifications. You can change reminder choices in SymptomTap and revoke notification permission in Apple Settings. Apple controls delivery and the system notification settings.

Exports, recipients, and third-party services

You can create a CSV or PDF export on the device. An export can contain symptom records, summaries, triggers, medication tags, saved Apple Health context, and—if you choose—notes. SymptomTap opens Apple's share sheet, and nothing is sent until you choose a destination.

A person, app, cloud drive, email service, or other destination you select then handles the exported information under its own terms. Michael Software receives an export only if you deliberately send it to Michael.

No third-party analytics, advertising, telemetry, or crash-reporting SDK was found in the audited SymptomTap build. The app has no advertising SDK, does not use an advertising identifier, does not perform cross-app tracking, and does not use symptom or health information for behavioral advertising or unrelated marketing.

SymptomTap relies on Apple platform services for the operating system, App Store distribution, HealthKit when enabled, Watch connectivity, widgets, local notifications, and the system share sheet. Apple may independently process information when you use the App Store, iOS, watchOS, system diagnostics, backups, or another Apple service under the Apple Privacy Policy. Michael Software does not control Apple's independent processing, and SymptomTap does not automatically send symptom records to Michael Software through these services.

Support and privacy correspondence

If you contact Michael Software by email, Michael may process your email address, message, attachments, and other information you voluntarily provide in order to answer you, provide technical support, or handle a privacy request. Privacy requests should go to michael@michaelsoftware.com. Technical support is available at support@michaelsoftware.com.

Please do not send sensitive medical details unless they are genuinely necessary to resolve your request. Email correspondence is not confined to your device: it is handled by the sender's and recipient's email systems and their providers.

Purposes and legal bases

For people in the EEA, the legal bases are limited to the processing described in this policy:

• Providing requested app functionality: local processing needed to record, display, synchronize, remind, and export information is performed to provide the functionality you choose to use (Article 6(1)(b) GDPR where applicable).
• Optional Apple Health access: to the extent this processing is under Michael's responsibility, it is based on your consent and, for health data, explicit consent (Articles 6(1)(a) and 9(2)(a) GDPR). You can withdraw it for future access at any time.
• Support, privacy, and security correspondence: legitimate interests in answering requests, supporting the product, and protecting the service (Article 6(1)(f) GDPR), balanced against your rights.
• Legal requirements: compliance with a specific legal obligation when one applies (Article 6(1)(c) GDPR).

Retention and deletion

On-device records and settings remain until you delete or change them, or remove the app data. You can delete individual symptom entries in SymptomTap and remove personal trigger and medication tags in Settings. Saved Apple Health context is deleted with the symptom entry that contains it.

To remove remaining local configuration and records, remove SymptomTap and its related Watch app from your devices. Apple-managed backups may retain a copy according to your Apple backup settings and retention. Michael Software cannot remotely retrieve, view, or delete local SymptomTap records because it does not possess a server copy.

Support and privacy correspondence is kept only as long as needed to answer the request, maintain appropriate support records, resolve disputes, or meet applicable legal obligations. To ask for deletion of personal data Michael Software actually holds, email michael@michaelsoftware.com.

Your choices and permissions

• Apple Health: keep linking off, switch it off in SymptomTap, or revoke SymptomTap's permission in the Health app or Apple Settings.
• Notifications: change reminders in SymptomTap or revoke notification permission in Apple Settings.
• Watch and widgets: remove the Watch app or widgets if you no longer want to use those functions.
• Sharing: review the export and choose whether, where, and with whom to share it.
• Local records: delete individual entries in SymptomTap or remove the app data as described above.

Your data-protection rights

Where the GDPR applies, you may have rights to information, access, rectification, erasure, restriction, data portability, and objection, and the right to withdraw consent where processing is based on consent. These rights apply to personal data actually processed by Michael Software. They do not create a server export of local records that Michael Software never receives.

International transfers

SymptomTap does not transfer its local symptom database to Michael Software or to a Michael Software server, inside or outside the EEA. If you send an email or choose an external export destination, the providers involved may process that information in other countries according to the provider and destination you choose. This policy does not claim a particular transfer safeguard where the relevant provider and route are not controlled or known by Michael Software.

Security

SymptomTap uses Apple's app sandbox and platform storage controls to keep its local data within the app and its App Group. Protect your devices with a passcode and current operating-system updates, and consider the sensitivity of an export before sharing it. No technology can guarantee absolute security.

Children

SymptomTap is a personal symptom-logging tool and is not specifically directed at children. This statement does not replace any age, consent, or supervision requirements that apply where you live.

Medical purpose

SymptomTap records information you choose to enter and can display related context. It is not intended to diagnose, treat, or replace professional medical advice. This clarification is about the app's function; it does not reduce the privacy protection applied to health-related information.

Changes to this policy

This policy may be updated when SymptomTap's functionality or applicable requirements change. The page will show a meaningful Last updated date. Material changes will be described before or when they take effect where required.
